Best ChatGPT Prompts for Solo D&D (Copy & Paste Guide)

Not everyone has a full D&D party that can assemble faster than the Avengers at the drop of a hammer (if you do…hit me up. I want in.) Sometimes you just want that quick fix between group sessions, or you want to carve out a slice of D&D heaven all to yourself.

In any case, having the right prompts so that you can dive right in to your next session, or generate new ideas, can truly streamline the experience.

That’s why this guide is designed to be simple: if you can copy & paste, you can play.

🎯 How to Use This Guide

  • Copy a prompt

  • Paste it into ChatGPT

  • Adjust details like level, setting, or tone

That’s it. Now let’s ride!

🎲 Core Prompts

🧭 Start Your Adventure

  • Act as a Dungeon Master. Create a simple D&D-style solo adventure for a level [X] character. Include a setting, objective, and first encounter.

🌍 Explore the World

  • Describe my surroundings in detail, including any points of interest, NPCs, or potential threats in a fantasy setting.

(Here you can always change the genre or setting to meet the tone of your story. Swap out fantasy for: Dark Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi, Pirate Theme, etc.)

⚔️ Generate Combat

  • Create a balanced combat encounter for a level [X] character. Include enemy types, environment details, and difficulty level.

(Sometimes you may not want a balanced combat experience. We’ve all likely had those overwhelming combats that were either massive successes…or failures…but were still epic. This is the time to play around with that here depending on where you are and what you need out of your campaign.)

🎭 Roleplay an NPC

  • Act as a fantasy NPC. Stay in character and respond based on my actions and dialogue.

(Same thing here as before; allow your world to live in between the themes or genres you need in the moment. Fantasy is a typical go-to, but the possibilities are really endless.)

🎯 What Should I Do Next?

  • Give me 3 possible actions my character can take next, including risks and potential outcomes.

(Don’t be afraid to play around with limiting the number of actions or outcomes. This can add a layer of challenge to your campaigns and stories, or make it easier if you want a more casual experience. You can even ask ChatGPT to make your outcomes irreversible/permanent. You decide…and no “takesies backsies”.)

🎁 Loot & Rewards

  • Generate appropriate loot or rewards for completing this encounter based on my level.

🧠 Keep the Story Going

  • Continue the story based on my last action and introduce a new challenge, encounter, or decision.

Upgrade Your Game

🔁 Maintain Continuity

  • Remember this character, setting, and story. Maintain consistency as the adventure progresses.

(***Don’t forget - it’s worth backing up your storyline and synopsis somewhere else just in case. Save a pdf, a word doc, anything to help track your character’s progress and story outside of just ChatGPT. Technology is great, but it’s never perfect.)

🎨 Adjust the Tone

  • Make the story more [dark / humorous / mysterious / high fantasy] while continuing the narrative.

(Maybe your character and party stumbled across a portal to another world or dimension, this is a great time to shake things up and explore new things without starting over.)

🎲 Add Dice & Randomness

  • Simulate a dice roll and determine the outcome of my action using D&D-style rules.

(I still prefer to use physical dice on my rolls and tell ChatGPT the outcomes. But if you’re on the go or just starting out without access to them, you can stick with simply asking it to do the rolls for you.)

🏁 Final Thoughts

Solo D&D doesn’t need to be complicated. My whole purpose of doing this series is to help others have easier access to the world of D&D. So with the right prompts, you can jump into a story anytime and keep it moving without overthinking it.

Use these as a foundation and tweak them to stylize your own story. Roll on…and may the dice be with you.
